Advanced Diagnostics

A number of more advanced diagnostic tests are available through the clinic, including:

MRI & CT Scanning:

MRI is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed, cross-sectional images of your pet’s body. This technology is particularly useful for visualising soft tissues such as the brain, spinal cord, joints, and internal organs. MRI is often employed to diagnose neurological conditions, identify tumours, and assess joint injuries.

CT scanning combines X-ray technology with computer processing to create detailed 3D images of your pet’s internal structures. CT scans are versatile and excel at visualising bone structures, chest and abdominal organs, and blood vessels. They are commonly used to diagnose fractures, internal bleeding, and various diseases affecting different organ systems. At the Vets can arrange CT and MRI when required.

MRI scanning is done by Pacific Radiology at their dedicated animal scanning unit in Christchurch.   CT is done also by Pacific Radiology but after hours.

Holter Monitoring and ECG – Holter monitoring for cardiac arrhythmias involves attaching monitoring electrodes to the chest (much the same as in humans) and recording the electrical activity of the heart over a period of hours or days. (See ECG & Holter Monitoring in Services)

Genetic Testing – We can arrange genetic testing for breed identification, and some specific breed associated diseases.

Blood Pressure Monitoring – monitoring blood pressure in animals is crucial for assessing their overall health. High blood pressure (hypertension) or low blood pressure (hypotension) can be indicators of underlying medical conditions. For pets with chronic conditions like hypertension, regular blood pressure measurements help veterinarians evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and adjust medications as needed. This is something we can do as part of a consultation for you.

Endoscopy, Bronchoscopy, Radiology, and Ultrasonography are available in clinic (see separate Services sections for details)
